Your voice

chapter-17

Improve your speaking voice by improving your:

  1. volume
  2. pitch
  3. speaking rate
  4. pauses
  5. vocal variety
  6. pronunciation and articulation
  • The proper volume for delivering a speech is somewhat louder than that of normal conversation
  • The volume should vary dynamically during the speech
  • Pitch can be improved by listening to a recording of yourself and identifying instances of monotone
  • Speak at a relaxed tempo
  • Pause strategically for dramatic effect
  • Replace filler words with silent pauses
  • Speak with natural enthusiasm

When speaking into a microphone, hold the microphone slightly below your mouth and several inches away. This will prevent the popping sounds of ‘p’, ‘t’, and ‘d’.
