Developing the Thesis

Thesis statement = topic + opinion

e.g. Social media is the best thing that has ever happened to the world.

The thesis statement:

• should be a simple sentence of 15 words or less
• should be able to follow the phrase “I think that…”

The thesis statement must not:

• be a fact
• state two sides of an argument equally

Stating the Thesis

The thesis statement should be in the form of “(thesis) because of (point 1), (point 2), and (point 3).”
