At Gallaudet, they tried to replace as many stairs with ramps as possible. Was it because there were more wheelchair users studying there? No. It was because the Deaf students were looking at each other while signing and weren’t looking at the ground. The stairs became a tripping hazard for the Deaf students. – Brad McCannell
Accommodating
Accommodating for people who are deaf requires a separate accommodation than people who are hard of hearing.
- Ensure there’s enough light for people to read facial expressions
- Reduce the noise in the environment
- Place convex mirrors at corners, or cut the corners to make it easier to see people approaching
