Create an Outline
Plan to create two outlines: a working outline, and a speaking outline.
The steps for preparing an outline are as follows:
- Create the main speech points
- Note any obvious sub-points
- Select an organizational pattern for the main points
- Create a working outline
- Organize main points and sub-points
- Check main points and sub-points for coordination and subordination
- Create a speaking outline
Create a Working Outline
The working outline, also called a preparation outline, will contain the entire speech. The working outline will be in sentence format.
- Write the body of the speech
- Write an introduction which includes the following:
- Attention getter
- Topic and thesis
- Credibility statement
- Preview statement
- Write the conclusion
Create a Speaking Outline
The speaking outline is a condensed form of the working outline for practice and delivery. The speaking outline will be in phrase or key-word format.
- Condense the points from the working outline
- Use just enough words to jog your memory while speaking
- Add any delivery cues
- Practise at least five times
Outline Format
The three outline formats are:
- sentence
- phrase
- key-word
| Format | Example |
|---|---|
| sentence | The prescription drug supply is under attack from a variety of increasingly sophisticated threats. |
| phrase | Drug supply under attack |
| key-word | Threats |
The speaking outline will be in phrase or key-word format. Key-word format is preferred so the speaker gives better eye contact.
