Unconscious biases 101

A bias is a mental shortcut. For example, from a young age, we learn that green = go. We may think “go” when presented with something green without even realizing it.

Performance bias

Ex. choosing a white male stock image over others because it reminds us of ourselves.

Attribution bias

We attribute qualities to new people we meet based on similar people we met in the past.

  • Call yourself out when it happens

Workplace consequences of choosing profits over safety

  • More sick days and absenteeism
  • Lower employee engagement
  • Fewer applicants
  • Poor reputation in the community
  • Toxic work environment
  • Increased turnover
  • Isolation of employees
  • Decreased productivity

Employer obligations

  • Investigate complaints in a confidential manner
    • Protect quotations and personally identifiable parts
  • Change policies, practices, or facilities to prevent violence
  • Have a workplace violence policy and ensure everyone can find it
  • Protect complainants from retaliation
  • Assess risk of violence

Behaviour under stress

Calling out vs calling in
